The Royal Naval / Royal Marine Reserve (RNR click here / RMR click here) is an integral part of Britain's naval forces, comprising a corps of some 3,250 men and women who train in peacetime to enable the Royal Navy to meet its operational commitments in times of stretch, crisis, tension and war. Although some 25% of RNR / RMR personnel have previously served in the Royal Navy, the majority are volunteers drawn from all walks of life, together with a small number of qualified Merchant Navy deck officers, civilian medical practitioners and nurses. Who can join?
To join as a Rating you need to be 16-40 (45 for ex-Royal Navy personnel) and be a citizen of the United Kingdom, Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland and should normally have lived in the UK for at least five years. The age restrictions are the same for those wishing to join as Officers but there are also certain academic qualifications required. If you are under 16, why not consider the sea cadets click here , or the marine cadets click here, both youth organisations are based on the Royal Navy.
What is the commitment?
As a member of the RNR / RMR, you would be subject to the provisions of the Reserve Forces Act 1996 and therefore, liable to compulsory call-out in both national emergency or in support of military operations outside the UK, including humanitarian operations and disaster relief. In normal peacetime circumstances, you will be required to undertake a minimum of 12 days Operational Role Training per annum, together with a number of training nights and some weekends. Most new entrants will be expected to attend training nights once a week at their nearest RNR / RMR Unit.
Although this commitment cannot be taken lightly, the RNR / RMR applies a sensible level of flexibility and consideration to the conflicting priorities of civilian employment and domestic life. Provided a call-out order is not in force at the time, discharge may be obtained at only a month's notice.
What is the reward?
You will be paid the same daily rate of pay as the Regular RN for all training, receive travel expenses and a tax free Bounty if you complete 24 days training per year.
